Michelle Williams and her musician husband Phil Elverum have separated after less than a year of marriage, a source tells People. Williams, 38, and Elverum, 40, married and moved in together without fanfare last summer.

“Michelle and Phil separated at the beginning of the year. It was an amicable spilt and they remain friends,” a source close to the situation says.

Williams first shared the news of her love affair in a cover story for Vanity Fair in July. Williams is the mother of Matilda, 12, whom she shared with the late Heath Ledger; Eleverum is father to a 3-year-old daughter from his first marriage to musician Genevieve Castree, who died of cancer just 18 months after welcoming their daughter.

Williams said of her relationship with Elverum, following her long search after Ledger’s death in 2008: “I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.’”

Williams can be seen in FX’s Fosse/Verdon, which airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
